This got me thinking.....Where is Nigeria Educational system heading to? How will the future of Nigeria Educational system look like? It is visible to the blind and audible to the deaf what is going on in our Educational system.
The Nigeria Educational sector have little or no investment at all. The country is not only blessed with natural and mineral resources but also with INTELLECTUALLY. Nigeria is blessed with intelligent and brilliant students who are ever ready to learn and explore but there are no encouragement or incentives from the government or non governmental organisations (NGOs).
The lack of investments and incentives in the Educational sector is doing more harm than good to the country’s economy. Even we the citizens of the country are also guilty. We all have a role to play in order to achieve a positive change and growth in the country’s educational sector.
Nigerians are always anxious and interested in non-productivity activities than the productive activities which will make us proud and improve on the future. Even the foreign investors are aware of this and therefore, they are taking advantage of Nigerian’s ignorance on the importance of Education to enrich themselves.
You hardly hear of any foreign investor who is willing to invest in our Educational sector rather they are all rushing to invest in Nigeria's entertainment industry.
Let’s take MTN for example. MTN is owned by south Africa and they make more money in Nigeria more than they make in south Africa. The multi-choice TV owners of DSTV and GOtv from south Africa are seriously exploiting Nigerians. In south Africa it is “pay as you use” but in Nigeria we subscribe monthly, they don’t care if you are watching or utilising your money or not, all they know is that by the end of the month you have to renew your subscription or else you will not enjoy the services again
Let’s take a look at the various Talent hunt shows in Nigeria. The sponsors are willing to give millions to the WINNER or WINNERS because they know what they stand to gain from these Talent shows. Big Brother (BB) agreed to have a show for only Nigeria (BB naija) because Nigerians are the highest voters in Big Brother Africa show. They make more money from Nigeria’s votes because they know that Nigerians are born wasters. We waste on things we will not benefit from......We see it as fun.
In all these Talent hunt shows, the contestants who are on probation or are on the verge of eviction will beg for our votes and each vote attract a particular sum of money. Let’s take BB naija for example:
One week votes
30 Naira per vote
11 million votes from their fans
Revenue- 330,000,000 Naira
Winner gets- 25,000,000 Naira ( less than 10% of a week gross)
Imagine how many times Nigerians will vote before the end of the show. Big Brother Big Business ( this statistic is applicable to not only BB naija but also to other Talent shows in Nigeria so please don’t take it personal)
Let’s imagine it was an educational show or IQ tests such as spelling bees, mathematics quiz, Essay writing, etc. That this money was invested on. Imagine all these votes for an educational programme. Won’t it go a long way in our Educational sector? Won’t it be an encouragement and incentive for students to read and work harder? With students reading and working harder won’t it reduce the rate of exam malpractice in the country?
Just the way we have Nigerians footballers who are good and unique but are playing for other countries instead of their country Nigeria so also do we have scholars who are Nigerians who studied abroad and are retained by those countries because they are extraordinarily unique in their field of study. Even our politicians are aware of these limitations that’s why they send their children abroad to go and study.
It is high time we the average Nigerians stand up to create a change in our Educational system. Stop waiting for the government all the time. The change can start from YOU AND I. As Emmanuella will say “use your head”
